1900-1902: The Colony Grows up

Noe Cociovich tells in his book “Genesis de Moises Ville” (Ed. Milá, 1987) that in 1899 the colony was already on the right road. With the guide of the J.C.A.’s administrator Miguel Cohen the colonists had found their source of sustenance in the cultivation of alfalfa and the milk production, items that were practically unknown previously in the colony and surroundings. Almost eleven years had lapsed since the arrival of the pioneers of the Weser. The most tragic and discouraging stage, the labour of childbirth - as Cociovich called them - of the creation of the colony, from the sterile insistence in attempting cultivations without probabilities of success, stimulated by the first administrators.

The members of the Grodno group, that had arrived in 1894 and 1895, had already demonstrated sufficiently that those “intellectual litvakes” could taken on and compete in the farm tasks.

It was then, when Cociovich, as representative of the Moises Ville's colonists, proposed to the J.C.A. to recruit a group of Lithuanian families to increase and to populate the colony. They accepted with the condition that this would be an independent administration and without their monetary intervention.  Cociovich would pay for his own trip and the colonists selected in turn they should be paid their tickets for themselves. Also to ease their acclimatization, the JCA demanded that those selected should already have relatives settled down in the colony.

Noe Cociovich, exemplary colonist and visionary leader (1862-1936)

Cociovich traveled to Russia in May 1899, and there he was able to form a group of 49 families that  left of the port of Odesa on 2 June of 1900, after having crossed Russia by train from north to south, a trip of about 1200 kms which took one week. One part of the group settled in “Grupo Wavelberg”, the former colony of Santa Elena, 10 km north from Moises Ville, and part of them in Virginia, 10 km East .

Cociovich continues his story and mentions that the new colonists adapted swiftly and began their rural tasks, which satisfied the J.C.A. so much that they immediately authorized an additonal group of 30 families of Bialystok, formed thanks to the initiative of Mr. Gdalia Bublik. Almost all them settled in a new area close to Moises Ville that they named Linea Bilaystok.

Later on the Jewish Colonization Association sent to Moises Ville a group of 40 Rumanian families that settled in Zadok Kahn, 15 km west of Moises Ville. For various reasons this group didn't succeed in settling, one being that few families settled in the colony. The Rumanian group aboard the SS Amiral Aube in Havre on 10 Nov 1901 and arrived to Buenos Aires on December 12 of the same year.

Cociovich left for a second trip to Russia on May 24, 1901, with the same instructions and conditions of the previous trip. Little is written about this trip. “January 5 1902 embarked on the Libava with 31 families, 217 people. He accompanied the group till Havre and returned immediately to Russia to continue with his mission. He left for Argentina with a second group of 25 families from the port of Libava on August 15,1902, and arrived in Buenos Aires on the 19th of September of the same year...”
